In Francis Bacon’s “The Four Idols” he identifies the four different classes of idol. The word idol he uses is from Greek word eidolon means image. Each of the idols arises from a different source, and represents its own special difficulties. The four idols are, the Idol of Tribe, the Idol of Cave, the Idol of Market Place, and the Idol of Theater. All this Idols have their own strength and weakness, and also how they implies about human reasoning. The Bacon’s central idea is that some of our ideas are so deeply rooted we sometimes don’t allow the new ideas in and when we do allow new ideas into our minds they make us question the ideas that were there before. Francis Bacon is simply targeting the common people, the ones who just simply denies to think differently without even making an effort. Bacon thinks that every reader of this essay is close minded and doesn’t understand that the world could be change.
According to Bacon the tribe idol addresses all of the errors, false notions, and that we do every day because it is inherited in our nature and our mind. Some of the characteristics are we over analyze, exaggerate, and making assumptions without evidence. The idol of cave are unlike the tribe. The idol of cave are individual tastes. Habits, and prejudices. The Francis provides its own example about idol of cave is that, some minds are more drawn to new things and new ideas than they are so. Idol of Market Place his third doctrine is errors and natural tendencies of every individual who use certain languages such as profanity. When we use wrong type of text, it creates the opposite approach of what you actually really meant to say. His last doctrine idol of theatre, is the false learning from scientific beliefs, theories, religion and our system. Bacon believes that we should become aware of our natural tendencies so that we can make corrections for it. According to Francis Bacon The idol of Market-Place are the most troublesome of all. I think this is true because when we misinterpret the words, it leads to confusion and misunderstanding which can lead to bad arguments and wrong understanding. As per idol of Theatre manipulates and betrays many people all over the world because of the false teachings people were taught and believed in. Bacon thinks that we should become aware of how these world views shape and distort our own perceptions of the world so that we might be able to correct for it a bit. HE brought up an argument that truth should be acquired from evidence of the real world. His argument was more empirical. It was empirical because it was based on observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic.
To sum up, we have natural inclination to accept, believe, and even prove what we would prefer to be true and always make premature judgements in rush. Means instead of gradually accumulating the evidence we do all in rush and make false decisions.
